Hi everyone,

It’s been a while since I wrote a personal update, so I thought given the timing of just returning from my trip to Japan, and with only a few days to go before I depart for another two and a half month NYC trip, it seemed fitting to put together a bit of a round up for the first half of 2015.

What can I say, as per usual I have had an absolute roller coaster of a ride and I am somehow still standing firmly on my feet.

After a crushing start to the year, where a turn of events left me feeling completely unappreciated and unreasonably questioning the value I brought to the table, I am proud of myself for once again standing up tall with my head up high, and pushing on despite feeling torn down.

Channeling my energy into both exercise and my career was empowering from both a physical and psychological sense; It enabled the Kara that I, and those whom have been around me over the years know, resurface in full force, and take on the next set of challenges with immense passion, positive energy, and integrity.

Now 7 years into having a never say die attitude when it has come to my work, I finally feel as though there has been proper traction.

I love that I can laugh at myself for being so shameless when it comes to repeatedly sending email after email, making call after call, introducing myself at expos and conferences continually, and going to meeting after meeting with people whom initially have no idea who I am, or why I am so adamant that I can add value to their work (if I had a penny for every ignored email or pitch that went nowhere I swear I would be a very wealthy young lady!).

I’ve come to realise that the age old remarks around persistence, perseverance, and resilience being key traits to ultimately kicking the goals you set for yourself in life are very very true.

I always feel like there are so many more things that can and will be done in the space of both my career, and life, yet I can still acknowledge how very humbling and heart warming an experience it is to have people you respect and admire in your field, and beyond, provide positive feedback or come to you with new opportunities.

Getting to work across strategy setting and service provision in new product development, marketing, branding, and communications over the past few months with such credible brands whom have integrity to match, such as Cobram Estate, Select Harvest, Activated Nutrients, Wonderful Pistachios, and more, has engrained my belief that if you stick to your wits about what you truly believe in and who you want to be aligned with, you can eventually get there (if you keep hustling that is!).

Being invited to join the Yakult media tour, and knowing both who had been invited in previous years, along with the company in which I was keeping on this trip, was beyond incredible to be a part of.

Being alongside 3 absolutely remarkable women in their own unique rights, including the incredibly knowledgable naturopath Lisa Guy from Body + Soul, the savvy executive trainer and public speaking dietitian Julie Meek, and the highly intelligent and well spoken ambassador dietitian Kate Di Prima, I couldn’t believe that my persistence in both believing in myself as well as in continuing to push my unique healthy eating message out there to the world, had somehow landed me a spot alongside such established senior professionals within my field at a relatively young age. It’s these little wins that make the little voice in your head say “keep going…you’re doing alright…just keep plugging away”.

Being shown an absolutely wonderful time by the Yakult team who you could see were genuinely so proud of both their company’s history, their ability to get health supporting probiotics into the hands of millions and millions of people daily, the unique set up of having their “Yakult ladies” hand deliver bottles of their products to their customers on a weekly or even daily basis, and their Japanese culture, was a pleasure to be around, and a rare opportunity to be shown Japan through such a unique lens.

I couldn’t believe on the factory tour that this one plant (out of 12 in Japan) produced over 1.2 million products daily, and that they didn’t have any holding stock..it was literally just producing what was required in the region for the day!

With huge research facilities in both Japan and Europe, the company was continually researching gut health and the use of their particular strain of probiotic (LcS). They explained how LcS is resistant to being destroyed in the GI tract and therefore actually gets absorbed by the body compared with many other probiotics consumed through food. They showed us the clinical trials that confirmed LcS is able to promote a number of positive effects such as reductions in recurrences of some cancers, improved bowel motions in the elderly, an enhanced immune system, as well as the array of other benefits we see probiotics perform around lifestyle diseases, weight management, mental health and so on.

My mind as per usual went straight to product innovation, trying to suggest lactose free or naturally prebiotic fibre sweetened varieties…what can I say, I don’t think we are going to see these products in the foreseeable future..but hey, one can only suggest!

My desire to speak up didn’t stop there, and on a totally different note, when I heard that Yakult owned a baseball team in Japan I thought it would be only fitting to pass through the request to perhaps go and cheer them on…lets just say this suggestion was actioned remarkably promptly with us all being taken to the game, being given jerseys from the advertising department, and getting to cheer the team to a solid win!

Visiting the fish markets, walking through the busy city streets, dining at top restaurants with incredible views, plus an array of other activities were all jam packed into 6 days of absolute fun!

For someone who hasn’t been in such a structured environment with meals, timetables, and so on being planned in over 15 years, they clearly did a remarkable job given I enjoyed every minute, and ended up in tears of laughter with the other women pretty much every day!

Now back in Australia for a week, my head has had to jump and focus onto the next venture, 2.5 months in NYC! What is about to come next I have absolutely no idea, but as per usual, I’m going to go in with a positive attitude, an open heart, a fiercely passionate drive, and see where on earth life takes me next.

Until my next update,

All I ask is that everyone keep trying to find the positives in every day, and keep appreciating the people you are lucky enough to have in your life,

For now,
