Crio Bru Healthy Chocolate

Week 1 of TDapproved and I thought I would start with something most people like, but do not always associate with the healthiest choices…chocolate!

Todays product, crio bru, is literally 100% grounded cocoa beans. I like it for a number of reasons; nutritionally it is super high in antioxidants, provides a gram or two of dietary fibre, is low in calories, is a source of theobromine which is thought to assist with boosting energy levels and concentration, and it actually contributes minerals such as magnesium and manganese to your daily intake.

This product is available in a range of flavours, and although the product is technically advertised to be used as a coffee alternative (I have made a hopefully safe assumption that the term “bru” was a play on the word “brew”!), and turned into a beverage, I actually use it as a cocoa powder to add a chocolate flavour to snacks or even my breakfast.

For example, I make a mix of crio bru cocoa, natvia (stevia + erythritol mix), grounded dry roasted almonds (I use Wonderful Pistachios range given I have been their ambassador, but we won’t let them steal the lime light on this post), and chia seeds; I then add this mix to my Greek style yoghurt, reduced fat ricotta (which I use as a spread), or even mix this through oats. As you can see, I just bumped up the healthy fats and the flavour, and reduced the glycemic load…and all at the same time as boosting the enjoyment of my meal ten fold!

If you are looking at cutting down your caffeine intake, although this product has a small amount naturally, it is still far far far less than coffee, and it could be a nice switch for you.

I also should point out that this product has stood out compared to some of the other cocoa powder “health” products I have come across in my time due to the lack of fillers. Many of the other brands seem to have a range of artificial fillers through them, and in all honesty, I am not really sure why! If you want a product from a company that promotes sustainability throughout multiple levels of their business, this is one of the ones to jump on the bandwagon for.

So there you have it, product number 1 to share with you all.

On their website they appear to have local providers in Australia, the USA, and Canada, so if you are interested in trying, just check it out for more details.

Look forward to seeing some of your healthy finds, remember to tag them as #TDfriend and #TDapproved or #TDrecipe (if you have a recipe to share that is!).

Happy Tuesday,

Travelling Dietitian (or now as we know me, TD) x
